Floyd Mayweather Childhood Story – Early Life and Family Background:

For Biography starters, Floyd Joy Mayweather was born on the 24th day of February 1977 in Grand Rapids Michigan, United States.

Young Floyd grew up with his highly dysfunctional family in the ghettos of Grand Rapids, a black spot that was 1600 miles away from Las Vegas in Michigan.

The ghetto, which was infamous for poverty, drugs and crime, portrayed the life of its inhabitants among which Mayweather’s family was not an exception.

“If you didn’t hear a gun during the week you’d wonder what was going on”.

Recalled Floyd of his upbringing in Grand Rapids.

Added to the moral corruption of the ghetto were broken homes and family feuds, which the Mayweathers had their fair share of.

While Mayweather paternal uncles Jeff and Roger worked as successful professional boxers, his maternal uncle, Baboon was at loggerheads with Mayweather Sr whom he once sought to kill with a gun over a drug beef.

However, Mayweather Sr averted what would have been his untimely death by using his son (baby Floyd) as a body shield.

The defensive tactic left Baboon with no resort other than to shoot his in-law in the leg, bringing weeks of their altercation to an end.

“I used my man (baby Floyd) because if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here today. I was still shot in the leg. What would you do with a gun on you?.

Floyd was my only shield, and I got shot with him in my hand. Baboon shot a big old hole in my leg, and I’m telling you that it would have been in my head or my chest”.

Recounted Floyd Mayweather Sr during a live BBC radio programme in 2015.

Floyd Mayweather Biography – Career Buildup:

Boxing was an integral part of Floyd’s life not long after he started walking. His father usually held him in front of speed bags whenever they visited the gym.

Months later, the young boy was throwing punches at anything that came in view.

The early relationship which Floyd had with his father took a break at various point as  Mayweather Sr was sometimes on the run (just like Alpo Martinez) due to his drug peddling activities.

Consequently, Floyd aged 8 started to live with his mother in New Jersey where he grew up with his sisters.

Mayweather Snr was not known to be a runaway. He would often show up to train his son who became an amateur boxer following his grandmother’s approval.

According to him, the fights he had as an amateur proved how much he loved boxing, hence the need to become a professional.
